This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.  If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?  Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” - 1 John 3:16-18

Help welcome Syrian refugees to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada!

Over the last few months people and community groups across our country have become increasingly aware of the plight of refugees fleeing the civil conflict in Syria.  We have felt a deep conviction to respond and do our little part to help alleviate the collective pain and suffering of the millions of people that have been forced to flee their homes.

There are so many ways to help, from donating to UNHCR and other disaster relief NGOs that are supporting refugees in countries surrounding Syria to giving and volunteering with local organizations that provide various refugee settlement services. But in Canada, we are also privileged to be the only country in the world that allows refugee sponsorship by private citizens.  Through the combination of refugee sponsorship by private groups and by the federal government, Canada hopes to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees by February of 2016.

South Edmonton Alliance Church (SEAC) is excited to be one of the many community and faith-based groups in Canada that will be undertaking private sponsorship.  We have already formed a refugee sponsorship committee group, and are working towards sponsorship of two Syrian families. Our SEAC family in partnership with other agencies and organizations has been supporting and journeying with new comers and low income families in our Millwood community for many years.  Our current partners and services include, but not limited to:

- Refugee Medical Clinic (one of the few clinics in the city to serve refugees or temporary foreign workers with gaps in medical coverage)
- Youth Unlimited (provides recreational and social programs/activities for neighbourhood youth)
- Community Pantry (provides food items to those that drop by seeking help with groceries)
- ESL Conversation Cafe

In addition to these partnerships, we have received great interest from many members in the wider community who are eager to support the sponsored families with practical needs such as finding accommodations, schooling, healthcare, language training, employment, and integrating into the community once they arrive.

The cost for a typical family of five is approximately $30,000.  Our target is to raise $60,000 by end of January 2016.

How can you help?

1.  Partner with us by volunteering on our refugee settlement teams, by providing financial support and through prayer.
2.  Click the "Donate" tab to find out how you can give.

3.  Our committee would also be happy to help you learn more about and potentially explore private sponsorship for your community group (see Resources section)

May you be blessed and your life be enriched as you follow your heart's conviction to help others.

With love,
South Edmonton Alliance Church - Refugee Sponsorship Committee
